A memorial commemorating the tens of thousands of homosexual people persecuted during the Nazi regime was opened this week in Berlin. The homosexual memorial consists of a grey rectangular block some four meters tall. One side has a small opening through which viewers can see a black and white art film scene of two men kissing.

Germany Grants Iranian Lesbian Asylum

A German court ruled on Monday that an Iranian lesbian cannot be deported because she faces a death sentence if returned to Iran because of her sexuality. The 27-year-old woman, whose name was not released, traveled to Germany in September 2003 and applied for asylum. According to Iranian human rights campaigners, over 4,000 lesbians and gay men have been executed since the Ayatollahs came to power in 1979.

Antwerpen to Host EuroGames 2007
The European Gay and Lesbian Sport Federation (EGLSF) has named Antwerp as the city that will host the eleventh edition of the EuroGames. The EuroGames will take place from Thursday, July 12 through Sunday, July 15, 2007. This is the first time that the event will be held in Belgium.

Germany Wins Bid for 2010 Gay Games

Gay Games officials have announced that Cologne, Germany will play host for the 2010 Gay Games VIII. The city beat out bids from Johannesberg and Paris. The 2006 Gay Games VII in Chicago is expected to bring more than 100,000 people and millions of dollars in tourist revenue to the city.

HIV Infection Among Gay Men Up in Germany; Europe

The overall number of new HIV/AIDS infections in Germany leveled off in 2004, but rose six percent among gay men due to a drop off in condom use, the country's disease research body, the Robert Koch Institut, reported on Tuesday in Berlin. The institute said the number of newly-diagnosed HIV/AIDS cases was around 2,000 last year, roughly the same figure as in 2003.

German Zoo Says Penguins Can Stay Gay

After fielding numerous complains from gay rights groups around the world, Bremerhaven Zoo director Heike Zueck has confirmed that zookeepers will no longer try to break up the three pair of homosexual birds they have in captivity. Previously, the zoo had flown in four female penguins from a zoo in Sweden in an attempt to encourage the male birds to leave their same-sex relationships and reproduce.
